The North-East India Geographical Society abbreviated as NEIGS was born in 1968 as the pioneering academic organisation of a single subject in the whole of N. E. India with its headquarters in the Department of Geography, Gauhati University. The major activities of the society are promoting better standard of teaching Geography in Schools, Colleges and Universities; fostering research in Geography; disseminating Geographic information, knowledge and new thoughts and also offering suggestions to the Govt. with regard to socio-economic planning and development of the state of N. E. India. Apart from publishing the Research Journal, ‘North Eastern Geographer’ and a popular magazine in Assamese, ‘Bhougolika’, the society is actively engaged in conducting extension lecture programmes in different schools and colleges of the state. The society also holds the Annual Academic Session with a seminar and a General Conference (Biennial).
